Barkly Highway State School - Term 2 Week 10
Principal's Welcome
Student academic reporting
This year, Semester 1 written reports will be sent home in week 2 term 3. This has allowed classroom teaching and assessment to continue until the last day of term 2.
Academic reporting involves communicating information to parents, carers and students about student achievement and progress for each learning area or subject undertaken, at a point in time. Reporting builds the school-parent partnership to improve student learning. School reporting processes are clear and transparent for parents.
In addition to providing written reports at least twice a year, schools offer parents opportunities to discuss their child’s educational performance at the school with their child’s teacher(s).
I encourage all parents who have not had a parent-teacher-student discussion, to make the time to connect with your child’s teacher to organise this.
A template in OneSchool is used to complete written reports to parents and includes student achievement for each learning area/subject studied in the reporting period, against the relevant achievement standard. Student effort and behaviour is also reported on.
An option, that our school accesses, is to provide additional information on aspects of particular learning areas or subjects. We use the comments section of the report for this purpose.
MID YEAR HOLIDAY
Wishing everyone a relaxing and safe holiday period. We will see everyone return to school for term 3 – Monday, 12 July.
Don’t forget – KEEP OUR SCHOOL SAFE
If you see anything suspicious around our school, please ring School Watch on 13 17 88.
Deputy's Report
School Opinion Surveys
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 30 July 2021. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5 and 6) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 5 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2021. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at our school. Our school computers will be available for use at school in the S.T.E.M. Room in the Resource Centre from 8:30-9:00 on these dates: Tuesday 13 Jul, Wednesday 14 Jul, Tuesday 20 Jul & Tuesday 27 Jul. One of our Information and Technology Technicians (Darrel Kropp or Jack Carpenter) will be available to support you to access the survey.
Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.
Attendance – at Barkly Highway State School Every Day Counts!
This week the attendance for ALL our students was 90.0% for the year. Our school target is 95% attendance for all students.
Congratulations to the 228 students with 90%+ attendance for term 2.
To acknowledge the importance of attendance over a term, students have enjoyed an Early Playtime from 12:55 -1:10 on Wednesday.
As we are nearing the end of term, our teachers are planning activities to ensure that the learning in the classrooms and playground continues until 2:30pm Friday 25 June, the last day of Term 2. This week, classroom learning will be based on the curriculum knowledge and understanding from this term’s class work that may require consolidation or extension.
We continue to promote the message to our students and families that “every day, every student is learning” and we expect to see every student at school enjoying the learning until Thursday 2:30pm. Thank you to everyone for supporting the school in this regard.
Library News
As the end of term is just around the corner, we ask to return all borrowing. About 160 overdue notices went out on Monday to students. We would greatly appreciate if you could ask and help your child/ren to locate any overdue books. Should you be unable to find a misplaced book, the school would appreciate your help to financially recover the cost of a lost book.
Book Club Issue #4 orders were handed out last week and backorders on Tuesday.
Term 3 is holding more excitement with two well received events.
Firstly, our second Book Fair for the year will be Week 6, from August 16-20.
Book Week will be in Week 7. We will celebrate with our now well-established Dress Up Day. Please mark your calendar for Friday, August 27th for our Dress Up Parade at 8.25. We are looking forward to seeing many fantastic and amazing book characters from the old favourites to the not so familiar. Let your imagination reign free!
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us with any queries you may have.
We wish our Barkly families safe and relaxing holidays.
Kind Regards,
Svenja Spitzner-Lewis
NAIDOC Celebration
On Friday 16 July, Barkly Highway State School will be celebrating NAIDOC Day. NAIDOC Day celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by all Australians. The day is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. We would like to welcome any volunteers from our community who could come in to support the teaching of the history, culture and language of the Indigenous people. If you can volunteer to assist with some of the activities, please email Donna Freestone at dxfre2@eq.edu.au
Commonwealth Bank Dollarmites Program
Barkly Highway State School would like to thank the students and parents for taking part in the weekly Commonwealth Bank Dollarmites School Banking Program over the years.
Isabella Dyer participated in this program and was the last banker for the school.
She was able to receive a reward for her efforts.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
Students to receive one on one support to apply for the NDIS
Students in North Western Queensland are now eligible for support to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The Assessment and Referral Team (ART) is a free government program helping eligible students aged 7 years and above to apply for the NDIS, so that they and their families can benefit from the supports and services the scheme provides.
The program is being delivered as part of a state-wide initiative of the Department of Seniors, Disability Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships in collaboration with Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) and the Commonwealth Government.
ART can help to:
· Fill in the necessary NDIS paperwork.
· Liaise with specialists and doctors to gather relevant medical reports.
· Facilitate clinical assessments where required.
· Submit students’ NDIS forms on their behalf and monitor the progress of the application.
People who gain access to the NDIS benefit from supports to help them get out and about in the community, gain access to therapies or special equipment, as well as entry to programs to learn new skills and obtain employment support.
ART and QDN will visit the following locations during the week beginning Monday 28 June 2021:
Mount Isa: Mount Isa Neighbourhood Centre, 72 Marian Street, Mount Isa
Date: Monday 28 June
Time: 12pm – 3pm
Cloncurry: RedDoor MultiSkill Centre, 32-36 Short Street, Cloncurry
