Barkly Highway State School - Term 4 Week 4
Congratulations to both our award winning Junior and Senior Rock Pop Mime Teams!
Principal's Welcome

NORTH QUEENSLAND REGION – LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE #1 ROADSHOW
Principals with attending leadership team from the north west area of our region, were challenged throughout the day to deepen understanding and application of the requirements of the P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework (CARF) with a focus on North Queensland Region’s Leadership Challenge #1
· Have a clearly documented, accessible Whole School Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Plan (CARP) aligned to the P-12 CARF and Australian Curriculum by end of 2022).
Throughout the day, clarity and line of sight through the system’s 3 Levels of Planning were developed with specific consideration of instructional leadership required to design, enact, monitor and review the CARP. Time was provided to review the system resources including guiding questions to support systems and processes of curriculum decision being made at the school level. NQ System leaders (including our Regional Director, Assistant Regional Directors and State School Team) travelled from Townsville to support us with the planning for the implementation at Barkly Highway State School.
2023 CLASSES
We are working towards preparing the school for 2023. Class formation has commenced and it is important for parents, who would like information about a student’s class allocation considered, that this information is forwarded to the Office by Wednesday, 02/11/2022. Any information after this date will be held over to 2023 class grouping, if necessary. It is important, that it is understood, that it is teachers’ professional knowledge on student interactions overtime in the school community that will be used to make final classroom placement.
Considering current student numbers, we will commence the year with 14 classrooms. It is anticipated that this will be made up of 2 classes of Prep-year 4 and 4 year 5/6 classes. If you have been associated with a Queensland State School before, the terminology, “day 8”, is not new. This is the timeframe when the staffing of a school is finalised. Changes in school organisation, (classrooms, teachers) may occur at this date. Class and teacher allocation is only temporary until this date.
PUMP TRACK
Thank you to our families who continue to support the school’s expectations for student travel to and from school:
· Walk or ride directly to school after leaving home to reach school by 8:20
· Walk or ride directly to home after leaving school at 2:30
We have been informed that Police Liason Officer George will make regular visits to the area of the Pump track at key times to monitor the area before and after school.
Enjoy the next two busy weeks.
Kind regards,
Fiona Kropp

YEAR 6 TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL
Our Year 6 students are visiting Spinifex State College as part of the final transition activities for students who will be in Year 7 next year on Wednesday 2 November. This Transition Day is designed to provide students with an introduction to secondary schooling and to familiarise students with the processes and procedures involved with being a member of the Spinifex community.
2023 STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Last week, I met with all of our year 5 students and discussed the importance and roles of our School Captain and School Vice-Captain in our school community, and the electoral process that the school follows this term. The children have been learning about the Australian Electoral Process in their Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) units this year. Many students indicated their interest in applying for student leadership in 2023.
All year 5 students received the paperwork to nominate for Student Leadership last Friday. The students will be required to submit their application, including a nomination form signed by his or her classroom teacher and a parent/ carer by 3:00 this Friday 28 November. In the following weeks, before School Captains are announced on the Awards Parade (Monday 2 December), short-listed students will be asked to have an interview, present a speech to year 4 and 5 students, with voting by year 4 and 5 students and all staff.
While the School Captain process is conducted at the end of the year with the year 5 students, the House Captain process is early in Term 1 and students will be informed of this by Mr Benson in 2023.

STUDENT SAFETY
Thank you to our families who collect their student/s promptly at 2:30pm, as this allows our staff in the areas near where students wait, to prepare their classrooms and lessons for the following day, without being interrupted. Students who continue to not follow expectations (sit quietly – no playing or running around) will be required to reflect on this the following day. With your support, by reminding your children that there is no play in the school grounds after 2:30pm, then students will sit and wait quietly to be collected. Please contact our on-site PCYC afterschool care provider, if you aren’t able to collect your child/ren at 2:30.
As we move into the warmer months of the year, all students are encouraged to be “sun” safe: “No sunsafe hat, no play!”, have a water bottle (these can be refilled at each break using our refrigerated water bubblers), seek shade when playing and think about where and what they play. All our students have access to the air-conditioned Resource Centre each First Break during play time and our students with additional support needs have access to our air-conditioned Sensory Room. All students can also choose to play hand ball or sit and speak with their friends in the Undercover Areas and under the big fans. Our Front Fort is shaded for our P-2 students to use during playtimes.
Thank you to parents who provide their students with an insulated lunch box or include a freezer pack/frozen drink in their children’s lunch boxes as this helps to keep lunches cool. Our students are all encouraged to store their lunch boxes in the classroom fridges when not in use. All rooms, including our Arts and STEM rooms, have fridges for this purpose.
Please join us in speaking with your children about drinking plenty of water and staying out of the sun e.g. seeking shade during playtime, in these warmer months of the year.
Please note: If it is raining at 2:30, the staff on duty in the Stop Drop N Go area, supervise our students in the Undercover Area to keep them out of the rain. Please collect your children from there, when it's raining.
Kind regards,
Cheryl Gallagher
Yr 6 Camp - Tallebudgera
Last week, Miss Connolly and Mr Benson took the Year 6 cohort on camp. On Sunday evening, they boarded a plane and then bus before finally arriving at Tallebudgera Beach School on the Gold Coast. The students were very excited to begin their Hero’s Journey. The week consisted of very exciting and challenging activities with students working extremely well as a team. They explored Burleigh mountain, went wake riding, rock climbing, body boarding, and even had to solve puzzles in an escape room. Over the week, students were able to earn different numbers that ultimately helped them crack the code to open the treasure chest and find the prize!

P&C News
The P&C would like to congratulate the schools Rock Pop Mime teams for their amazing efforts at Rock Pop this year! They all worked so hard, and you could see it on the night! Thanks to previous fundraising events, P&C were able to support the Rock Pop Mime teams through financial support of up to $2,000!
On Monday's' parade, we presented some brand new sandpit toys for the students to enjoy. This donation of $1,500 worth was again from profits raised at stalls, discos and events.

OUR FINAL FUNDRAISING EVENT IS COMING UP!! November 11, from 5-7pm at Barkly Highway SS Oval. It is going to be huge! We announced on parade through a mini water fight that we are holding a Barkly Slip & Splash event for all our parents, teachers & students to participate in. This is a family friendly event, with everyone's involvement making it the more the merrier, with also lots of sweets, drinks and a BBQ to feed everyone! A Flyer is attached and permission forms are coming!

The executive would also like to say farewell to our Vice-President, Cameron Gibson! He has had to resign from his position and so we want to say thank you for everything you've been able to offer our P&C, be it meeting ideas, electrical maintenance, disco setups/packdowns and the behind-the-scenes work that makes our P&C function so well! Thanks Cam!
Lastly, we have our final P&C meeting coming up on the November 8 at 6pm in the Resource Centre. It will be a great chance to finalize preparations for the Slip & Splash event, reflect on the great year we've had and start looking forward to what 2023 can hold for our P&C. Learing in 1 Gold
1 Gold have been super busy over the last three weeks!
In English, we’re learning all about procedures!
- How to write them
- Using the correct verb to match our command, e.g. we don’t sprinkle or whisk butter on bread, we spread it.
- How speech bubbles can tell the reader more information about the characters feelings and thoughts.
- Some procedures require ingredients and equipment, where as some don’t.
The class has turned our back end of the room into the Lighthouse Kitchen Cove based on our assessment stimulus - The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. So far we’ve written and followed a pizza and fairy bread procedure, sending these foods up to the lighthouse keeper, Mr Grinling.
In Maths, we’ve been learning all about halves, which tied in nicely with our procedures. We decided that whatever ingredients we put on one half of the pizza or fairy bread, we had to put the same amount on the other half. We then graphed our favourite pizza toppings using pictures.
Over the next week we will continue looking at different ways to display our data through tally marks and bar graphs.
- Miss Hill
