Barkly Highway State School - Term 4 Week 6
Thank you to our wonderful P&C Association for all of your Fundraising efforts this year!
Principal's Welcome
With the recent release of the refreshed Australian Curriculum, school representatives participated in the Forum for school leaders: Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 held at the Mount Isa CLaW. This was the first of the professional learning and support to be provided by Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) about the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 for all Queensland schools.
While all Commonwealth, State and Territory Education Ministers endorsed the revised version of the P–10 Australian Curriculum, Version 9.0, in 2021, the Queensland Minister for Education advised that Queensland schools would continue to use Version 8.4 of the P–10 Australian Curriculum in 2022. This remains the current advice.
From this meeting, the feedback to QCAA was for face-face support for schools and teachers so effective implementation of the Australian Curriculum in Queensland will occur. QCAA also will include the provision of advice, resources and professional learning aligned to Queensland’s approach to implementation. In 2023, we will implement a familiarisation and planning process in the Learning Areas of English and Mathematics, while in 2024, English and Mathematics will be implemented. Further details can be found at https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/.
Over the next two weeks, at whole school level, the plan is to view the:
- 2023 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP Draft vsn) presented to the P&C at its recent meeting, before submitting to the region for endorsement which will ensure 2023 focus commences day 1 of Term 1.
- 2022 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Plan (CARP) and document the 2023 CARP ensuring we have considered the 3 levels of planning (Provision, Year and Class Levels)
Other important work involves class allocation, Academic Reporting, class location and year book.
We will also be preparing to acknowledge and recognise students for academic achievement at our Awards Parade (Prep - year 5) and Year 6 Farewell.
Looking forward to enjoying the next two busy weeks in our school community,
Kind regards,
Fiona Kropp

2023 STUDENT LEADERSHIP Process Update
All year 5 students who nominated for School Captain/Vice Captain have participated in an interview with Ashley Benson and myself. The next step for these students is to prepare and rehearse a speech to present on Wednesday, 16 November in front of our year 4 & 5 students. After the speeches, we will be holding the election. Our year 4 and 5 students and staff all participate in voting for our 2023 student leaders. We look forward to hearing the speeches from these year 5 students.
In the final week of term, our School Captains are announced on the Prep to Year 5 Awards Parade on Monday 28 November.
While the School Captain process is conducted at the end of the year with the year 5 students, the House Captain process is early in Term 1 and students will be informed of this by Mr Benson in 2023.
TRANSITION – 2022 PREP OPEN MORNINGS
We will be holding our 2022 Prep Transition mornings on Tuesday 15 and Thursday 17 November. This tradition in our school is a fantastic way for our incoming Prep students and families to see what school is like and meet new friends ready for next year. Our Prep teachers are looking forward to spending an hour with our new students each day.
An animation to view:
This is the story of how children grow well...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-88DCY6-Nk&feature=youtu.be
"This Qld Department of Education animation brings to life five key messages about the kinds of care and environments that children need for optimal growth and development in the early years."
REMEMBRANCE DAY - 11:00 November 11
Our Student Leaders will lead a parade at school this Friday to commemorate Remembrance Day after First Break. They will share information about the significance of this day, read The Ode of Remembrance and hold a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to those who have died and suffered, and to reflect on the loss and suffering caused by war. Our school chaplain has been working with interested students during lunch breaks to make red poppies to wear on Remembrance Day. Red poppies are often worn on Remembrance Day. Since 1921 wearing a poppy has enabled Australians to show they have not forgotten the more than 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have given their lives in wars and conflicts during the past 100 years. Rosemary is now worn as a symbol of remembrance and has particular significance for Australians as it is found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula.
Every day counts
It’s important that children attend school every day because:
- children achieve better when they attend school all day, every day
- going to school means getting a better chance in life
- school helps children build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience
- going to school is a legal requirement
Safe Parking Practices Around Our School
Our students’ safety is an important issue at our school. Road safety is a matter for the whole school community. Please park safely while waiting to collect or drop off your children before and after school. Parents are requested to use the parking along Bougainville Street, Thorpe Street or at the Stop, Drop & Go area on Urqhart Street.
Kind regards,
Cheryl Gallagher
5/6 Gold News
It has been a busy Term for 5/6 Gold! It has been a blast getting to know the students since taking over 5/6 G at the start of this Term. One of my goals coming back onto class and into the upper years is trying to find fun and creative ways to engage the students with their learning.
During our Math unit on fractions and decimals, I surprised the class with a spooky Maths Day. Students got to participate in different activities involving fractions and decimals but of course, all in a spooky theme. The other 5/6 classes were also able to enjoy this set of activities and a day in the spooky room. The other 5/6 teachers and I are currently planning our next fun Math Day which we cannot wait to share with our Barkly families.

Pump Track
Thank you to our families who continue to support the school’s expectations for student travel to and from school:
- Walk or ride directly to school after leaving home to reach school by 8:20
- Walk or ride directly to home after leaving school at 2:30
Regular visits to the area of the Pump Track at key times to monitor the area before and after school continue to occur by Police Liason Officer George, Chappie Sue and the police surveillance.
P&C News
This Friday is our Slip & Splash event!
Please come along and enjoy this fundraiser with plenty of fun activities for all the students and adults. We hope that everyone enjoys this fundraiser and we finish off the year in style.
I also wanted to do a quick mention of some of the amazing things we have recently been able to do because of previous funds raised. These have been announced on parades of late, but they include:
- Purchasing $1,500 worth of new sandpit play equipment for student to use
- Donating over $1,500 towards the Rock Pop Mime groups costumes, backdrops and equipment.
- Putting over $2,200 towards upgrading/fixing the schools portable sound speaker system for use on the oval, sports days and swimming carnivals.
- We have also got the funds and started creating our Lehmann's Legacy garden down at prep, with more work getting completed in the next few weeks.
We've had some great celebrations of late with our own P&C doing a Thank-You hamper for our teachers on World Teachers Day, and we had a great response to our Frog on a Pond special for Tuckshop Day. We didn't get to say this a lot on the day, but we are EXTREMELY grateful for our amazing tuckshop worker, Shellea. The tuckshop has been able to be opened for 2 days a week because of Shellea, and she has been a mainstay this past year with multiple times being called upon to go above and beyond for us. Thank-you Shellea, you have definitely kept this P&C tuckshop afloat, and was voted MVP at our meeting last night! Thanks.
Looking forward to this Friday, please note that there is a cost to attend which is payable before or on the day. This is just $5 per person, capped at $15 per family. This is due to trying to raise funds, but also covering costs of activities for all people attending. Hope everyone has a great afternoon, see you there!!

Library News
As you would have been aware our much-anticipated Book Fair had to be cancelled as the crates didn’t arrive. Unfortunately, we can’t hold it any later this year due to time restraints. Our sincere apologies for this inconvenience.
Book Club Issue #8 brochures have unfortunately also arrived too late to hand out and receive book orders back in time before holidays start. If you wish to order from Book Club you can do so via Scholastic online and order directly to your home address (this will incur a fee). We will have some brochures at the office available for you to take if you wish, but we will not be able to accept any orders at school for this Book Club Issue #8. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience this is causing.
With the end of the school year approaching fast, it is time to return all student borrowing by Friday 18, November.
Overdue notices are regularly sent out to affected students. Please help your student to locate their book to return them in time. Should you not be able to locate a missing book, we would appreciate if you could help the school to financially recover the cost of the book. Payments can be made at the office. We sincerely thank you for your help in this matter.
As always, we are happy to help with any queries you may have.
Kind Regards,
Svenja Spitzner-Lewis
