Barkly Highway State School - Term 1 Week 6
Principal's Welcome
SCHOOL REVIEW IN TERM 2
The department regularly reviews Queensland state schools to make sure they're delivering a quality education to students. Every Queensland state school is reviewed at least once every 4 years. The reviews are performed by the School and Region Reviews (SRR) branch and are tailored to the needs and context of each school.
Community feedback is an essential part of the reviews, with staff, parents, students and the community encouraged to have their say. If you are interested in being involved and will be available during week 6 to meet with the review team, please contact the school office by email – use SUBJECT “School Review” so we can include you in our future planning (admin@barklyhighwayss.eq.edu.au). Parent feedback is an important part of the any school review, so I encourage you to consider having your say.
School review findings are analysed for emerging trends and areas requiring greater focus, with results shared through research publications.
Our School Review is an important time as the school will use the findings to develop clear actions to move the school forward. It is scheduled for Tuesday – Thursday 22-24 May (Week 6 Term 2).
SCHOOL SWIMMING
In line with the department’s P–12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework, Queensland state schools are required to provide a water safety and swimming education program in Prep to Year 6.
Our year 3-6 swimming block this week has seen 89% of eligible students attend. The excitement in the school is heightened at this time – changing school clothes to swimmers and vice versa, lost socks and shorts, wet hair and the bus rides to and from the pool. However, it is the time in the swimming pool where the learning occurs.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival on Monday afternoon starting at 4:00. Swimming Carnival details were sent home on Tuesday.
Kind regards,
Fiona
Deputy's Report
SAFETY FIRST – Keep our footpaths outside the school free of parked cars.
We ask that you, our parents/caregivers, take the extra few minutes to park or drop off/pick up students in the appropriate areas around the school as this will improve the safety of our students.
Please do not park on the footpaths outside the Staff Carpark near the Supervised Crossing on Buka Street or use the Staff Carparks to drop off and/or pick up our students. We want our children to enter and exit the school safely using our dedicated pedestrian only entry/exit gates: near the Buka Street zebra crossing, on Bougainville Street near Junior Playground, the Stop Drop N Go gate or the gate near our Yarning Circle.
BARKLY HIGHWAY STATE SCHOOL IS A SAFE AND RESPECTFUL WORKPLACE:
Communication - Talk to us
There’s a saying that we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak. Here at Barkly Highway State School we want everyone to communicate with one another with respect, after all we are all working towards the same goal.
We are a safe and respectful school community and we expect parents and school visitors to be polite, to act as positive role models, and to recognise and respect personal differences. If you have an issue with your child’s education ask for a meeting to discuss your concerns in the appropriate environment.
Remember we are working together to give your child the best education possible. Your child, our student. One team.

Personal connections in Prep Gold
In Prep Gold this term we have been learning how to make personal connections with the stories we are listening to. We really loved the story Uno’s Garden and decided to make our own small world play space inspired by Uno. We used items found at op shops, parents donated plants and our amazing imaginations. In the coming weeks we will add to our Uno’s Garden and also begin growing some plants outside.
3 Blue Class News
This week in maths 3Blue has been investigating how to identify a 3-digit number on a number line.
Students had to
- Identify the pattern and fill in the missing numbers
- Mark the half way point in the number
- Identify the halfway number.
Library News
The start of this term has been very busy and students are enjoying borrowing on a weekly basis. With the warm weather around, we have been also quite busy during lunchtimes with children playing on computers, reading, drawing, playing games or just hanging out.
Book Club Issue #2 has been ordered and we will be handing out student orders as they arrive.
We have our first Book Fair for this year planned from Monday 06 - Friday 10 March. Opening hours will be 8.00-3.00 Monday -Thursday and 8.00-11.00 on Friday. Students will have half an hour of viewing time during the week with their class and also have the opportunity to purchase during both lunch breaks. They may come home with a wish list, this is to create a talking point at home, but there is no obligation to purchase. We do encourage our families to come and browse, enjoy and maybe choosing a book together.
We are looking forward to seeing you at our Book Fair!
As always, please contact us with any queries you may have.
Kind Regards,
Svenja Spitzner-Lewis
