Barkly Highway State School - Term 3 Week 10
Principal's Welcome
PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
“If done well, parent engagement could add the equivalent of 2 or 3 extra years schooling for a child.” (Hattie, 2008)
Our last P&C Meeting for the term was held on Tuesday evening. I take this opportunity to thank our P&C Executive and members of the P&C, who attend meetings on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 to work together to provide additional opportunities for our students. Look out for the details of the next family activity that is being planned for in November.
Please come along and support this dedicated small group of families and staff who work together for our school community.
STAFFING TERM 4
I will be on long service leave for the first 2 weeks of term 4. During this time, Kamrynn Roberts, will be Principal (Officer-in-Charge) and Sariah Tamihana-Ratana will support Kamrynn in the Deputy Principal role.
I trust that you will enjoy the school holiday break with your children and look forward to catching up on my return.
Kind regards,

Zoomed-in-Science
This term our 5/6 cohort had the opportunity to engage with a scientist team from Brisbane in their very own classroom via a Teams' meeting.
The Zoomed-in Science team showed the students what it looks like to be a scientist. The students were given a virtual tour of a chemistry research laboratory and got to see some real research experiments. Then the team performed a range of exciting experiments designed to help students engage with their curriculum learning, including a rainbow of colour changing chemical reactions, purple gas, liquid nitrogen freezing things, a design-you-own experiment with dry-ice and the famous elephants toothpaste reaction.
Thank you to The Centre for Materials Science at Queensland University of Technology and Boeing for bringing this amazing opportunity to our students.
Colour Fun Run
What a great way to finish off a very busy week , last Friday at the Crazy Colour Fun Run! Congratulations to all our students, parents and teachers who got out there and made our day such a blast! We raised $17 513. Well done!! Outdoor furniture is coming our way.
Online prize ordering has now opened, so be sure to jump on and order the prizes you worked so hard to achieve.
Teacher Aide Appreciation Week
Last Thursday, our staff held a morning tea in honour of our amazing teacher aides. Week 9 was ‘Teacher Aide Appreciation Week’, a time to recognise and celebrate the effort and professional expertise teacher aides bring to their role. Teacher aides not only support student learning, they contribute to safe, inclusive and fun school environments. We are truly grateful for our wonderful team – Mrs Lehmann, Miss Jenny, Miss Belinda, Mrs Lewis, Miss Esther, Miss Ainsley, Miss Wendy, Miss Harmony, Miss Fale, Miss Ashlea, Miss Vanessa, Miss Kate.
Thank you for a great finish to term 3. I hope the upcoming holidays are filled with fun, family and friends. Stay safe and see you on Tuesday 3 October .
Kind regards,
Kamrynn Roberts
K-2 Deputy's News
Happy holidays, everyone! What an exciting term of learning we all have had. The creative way our teachers engage every student everyday always amazes me. As term 4 approaches, we are reminded the end of the year is near. To ensure a successful transition into the next grade it is important for families to assist us by talking to your child about the changes that will be happening next year. Successful transitions are planned for by all staff for each child at our school. Please keep the communication lines open with us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child. We welcome new children and new families regularly into our school. Next term, our 2024 prep students will complete kindergarten to school transitions. Some of the major dates for this next term are included in the below flyer.
Kind regards,
Bec Cremona
Engagement & Wellbeing
Hello families!
What a fantastic end to term 3. You can feel the flurry of excitement as the school holidays approach closer and closer. I am hearing from students about how they are going away on holiday, seeing family, spending days at the Fun Park Precinct and the Pump Track. Students are waiting with baited breath to sleep in, watch television, play with their friends and spend time with their families. This shows us how strong our family culture is here at Barkly Highway.
Our social skill this week is about holiday safety. We have spoken about this in Think Tank and on parade the importance of wearing a helmet on a scooter, bike or skateboard, how we look right, left then right again before crossing the road and if there’s a crossing, use it. We would love to see everyone return on Tuesday, 3 October safe and happy.
I wish you all a restful and enjoyable holiday. See you all for term 4!
Kind regards,
Donna Freestone
Science in 1 Blue
This term in Science, 1 Blue have been learning all about landscapes and the sky. We know that the weather and day/night time can change them and impact the types of activities that people might participate in. We have also learnt that landscapes can be natural, managed or constructed or have features of all three!
We even got to build our very own landscapes!
Instrumental Music Primary Schools’ Gala Night
We are very excited to announce an Instrumental Music Primary Gala Evening will be held this year!
