Deputy's Report
Welcome back to another exciting, busy term!
This Friday, 13 October is the annual Rock Pop Mime, held at Tony White Oval. Gates open at 5pm, entry is $5 per person and under 3’s are free. The show will begin at 7. Come along and support all the hard work our students’ and teachers’ have been putting into creating their masterpiece.
Week 4, our Prep – 2 cohorts have the opportunity to participate in ‘Learn to Swim’ Program . Payment and forms are due back to the office by Wednesday, 18 October. This allows time to arrange groups and finalise numbers.
CONGRATULATIONS Rebecca Samios. Last week, 31 of Queensland's most inspirational teachers were announced as recipients of prestigious state teaching awards and Barkly Highway are very proud to claim Miss Rebecca Samios as our very own! TeachX Awards have been dedicated to recognising outstanding excellence of Queensland teachers for over a decade.
K-2 Deputy News
This term has started with an exciting bang! Each class has been engaged with the new units of work in each subject area. Please ask your child about what they are learning and encourage them to read for pleasure each night.
During the week we started 2024 Prep Enrolment Chats. Meeting and welcoming each student and their family is a privilege. We know you will love Prep at Barkly Highway State School. Prep enrolment chats will continue next week.

Engagement & Wellbeing
Hello families!
What a wonderful start to Term 4! It has been wonderful visiting classes and seeing the engagement in learning by the students. There is also a flurry of excitement for Rock Pop Mime this coming Friday night. Rehearsals are frequent, students are a mix of nerves and excitement and the teachers who are running it are ready.
Our social skill this week is about being respectful by communicating in a kind and positive manner. We have spoken about how there are many different ways to communicate such as: body language, verbally, gestures and the written word and how important it is that if we don’t have a kind word or gesture, then don’t do it.
There a many exciting events this term. It is the final term for our current Year 6 cohort and events such as the Farewell, visits from Spinifex State College, transitions at Spinifex and tools for change will take place. We have our P-2 swimming week, the awards parade and our End of Year Concert to also look forward to.

Science in 5/6 Blue
For this term’s science in 5/6 Blue we have been exploring matter, it’s different states and investigating the nature of matter. We have conducted some investigations and tests to determine the nature and properties of matter. We examined how combining different types of matter together could change their density and observed how an egg would behave when put into different combinations of water. Our salt water supported the egg and made it float. The class is looking forward to doing some more tests and experiments this term.
Pre-prep Playgroup
Come along and join in on our Pre Prep Playgroup - every Wednesday 1:30-2:30 in the Prep Precinct. Yesterday, we had lots of fun making pizzas with our future students, using ingredients from our very own Prep Farm!
ECDP Transition
Transition to Prep!
The ECDP (Early Childhood Development Program) children have been enjoying practising transitioning to Prep. Miss Kylie, Miss Wendy, Miss Harmony and Miss Fale have been taking us for regular visits to Miss Samios’ and Miss Smiths’ classrooms. We have enjoyed exploring the classrooms, the playground, and the gardens.
We are learning:
- where to hang our school bags
- what to do when we enter the classroom
- the hands-on, play-based activities we are doing that day
- where we play at break time
- where the bathroom is, and so much more!
We can’t wait for the 2024 school year to begin!
