Barkly Highway State School - Term 1 Week 6
Principal's Welcome

IMPROVEMENT JOURNEY - NEXT STEPS
Academic Case Management has been a Key Signature Practice of our school in the P-2 area and has been instrumental in the success of the improvement in the Levels of Achievement (LOA) in English and Mathematics during this time. As identified in our School Strategic Plan (2024-2027) and the 2024 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) upscaling P-2 practices is a focus in the Year 3 – 6 area of the school this year .
Through this approach, an identified student's progress is closely monitored, ensuring personalised support and intervention where needed. By utilizing markers to track student growth and address any challenges promptly, classroom teachers and line managers are committed to ensuring that every student continues to move forward in their academic journey. With this proactive approach, we're confident that students will continue to move forward academically. Together, we're fostering a supportive learning environment where every child can reach their full potential. We use the Marker Student Approach in our Case Management currently.
In this week’s staff meeting, teachers revisited Academic Class Management processes in the school and an improvement challenge, “% to # to names” from our School Supervisor, Helen McCullough, from her earlier visit was presented.
- To achieve a 5% lift in English LOA data in P-2 and year 3-6.
- This equated to an identified number of students. Who are the students who teachers can identify for the lift?
- 9 students from year 3-6 will achieve LOA above 90%
- 6 students from Prep— for roughly 4% lift
- CHALLENGE - 3 marker students per class of lowest achieving and/or DEN, C-B, B-A
On Helen’s next visit, she will be checking in to see how the staff are going!
Kind regards,
Fiona Kropp

Artwork – Deadly Arthur
This week, the very talented Indigenous artist, Arthur Conlon aka Deadly Arthur visited our school and brightened up our school grounds. Deadly Arthur was commissioned through the Rural Remote Education Access Program (REAP) a cluster fund between the state primary schools in Mount Isa. Throughout the 2 days students helped contribute to the murals which included a rolling hill landscape, a large kangaroo, sand goanna and rainbow serpent. Bora Rings (meeting places) also feature in the murals, different sized Bora Rings represent different tribes.
The staff and students are very impressed with the new artwork. What do you think? We would love to hear from you!
Kind regards,
Kamrynn Roberts

Prep – Year 2 Reading
In all of our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms our teachers do a fantastic job of planning exciting and hands on lessons and activities to teach reading. It is so wonderful to walk around and see classrooms buzzing with happy and engaged learners. Have a look at a little sample of some great activities in 1 Blue and 1 / 2 Green!

Stay tuned for a spotlight on Prep and 2 Blue in our next newsletter!
Project 1000 – Transitions
As part of our Transitions way of working we aim to know 100% of our incoming Prep students by the end of Semester One in their year before school.
If you have a child turning 5 from 1 July 2024 – 30 June 2025 they are eligible to begin Prep in 2025 and are of Kindy age for 2024. We would love to hear from you if you know your child will be beginning Prep with us in 2025 and/or if you need support enrolling your child into a Kindergarten in 2024.
Contact the school office on 44037 3633 or come in and see us and we can make a time to talk about how our school can support you and your child with the transition from Kindergarten to Prep 2024-2025.
Attendance
Let’s celebrate!!! Our Prep – Year 2 attendance data has had a slight increase to 91.74% and we have had a large decrease in the number of unexplained absences. Don’t forget, if your child is away, let your classroom teacher know, use the absentee line or reply to the text message you receive on your mobile. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our families and classroom teachers for working together toward our 0 unexplained absences goal!
Kind regards,
Yvette Wehlow
NAPLAN
This week our year 3 and 5 students have participated in practice sessions to familiarise them the testing environment and the practices they will be undertaking in week 8 and 9 of this term with the beginning of NAPLAN. From March 13, students will be begin their NAPLAN testing with 4 different competencies assessed, writing, reading, conventions of language and numeracy. NAPLAN serves as a snapshot of student learning across Australia at a point in time. The sessions are used to determine what students understand and the skills they possess across the core learning competencies and provide valuable insight for national, school and individual student planning. It is important for students to come to school prepared for these activities by eating healthy food and getting plenty of sleep to ensure they are doing their best. We look forward to taking part in this national assessment period and providing students an opportunity to demonstrate their learning progress.
