Barkly Highway State School - Term 1 Week 10
Principal's Welcome

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
At Barkly Highway State School, we firmly believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls, encompassing a range of experiences that shape well-rounded individuals.
Whether it's excelling in sports, entertaining audiences through the arts, demonstrating leadership or contributing to our school community service initiatives, often requires students to dedicate and commit their free time or lunch breaks to achieve this with the support and encouragement of staff to nurture them towards success. Recent student opportunities of which our students have participated include school band and youth parliament.
PARADE BAND PERFORMANCE
On our parade this week, Miss Hoffman, Instrumental Music Teacher – Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, introduced her students in our school band. The students performed 2 items, First Fundamentals and Band Class Exercise 7 which they have been practising this term.
First Fundamentals will be performed at the Eisteddfod in week 2 and also Fanfare in week 5 in Term 2.
Congratulations to these students for your commitment to attending Monday morning from 7:30 for your band practice session prior to your lesson during the day.

MOUNT ISA YOUTH PARLIAMENT
This week, under the guidance of teachers, Miss Duncan and Mr Alley, a group of students participated in the Mount Isa Youth Parliament along with other schools in the Traegar Electorate.
I commend the students for their participation in these opportunities and congratulate all students this term who have enjoyed success from the challenge!

STUDENT ENROLMENTS
Our curriculum plan, across the year levels have allowed the flexibility of a composite class to be formed if required from our straight class.
This term while our overall number of students has remained around 280 students, we have enrolled 31 students, with 10 students in year 4.
With our year 4 Blue and 3/4 Green classes at or over the recommended student number, the year 3 Blue class recently has been adjusted to accommodate the additional students enrolling, with it now being renamed as 3/4 Blue. Miss Wood, Miss Wall and Miss Teede-Miller with guidance from Mr Alley (HOD:C) have met this week to plan next term’s curriculum overview.
STAFFING
Today, we say farewell to Mr Bransgrove, 5/6 Blue teacher this term. We thank you for your time, dedication and all that you have done during your time at our school. While only for a short time, your contributions to our school community are appreciated. Miss Brooklyn Ruddy will be the classroom teacher from Term 2.
Wishing a happy Easter and a safe school holiday to all our students, families, and staff! As you embark on your break, remember to stay safe, take care, and make the most of this well-deserved time off. Wishing you all a great break and looking forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the new term ahead!
Kind regards,
Fiona Kropp
K-2 Deputy's News

What a wonderful first term it has been here at Barkly Highway State School! So many exciting things to celebrate. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our school community for your support with your child’s learning journey so far in 2024.
Volunteers needed for Under 8s week
Don’t forget we are still looking for families to volunteer in a variety of different ways for our Under Eights celebration on Friday 24 May.
Ideas include:
- Toys that are relevant to your culture
- Help students complete a craft that will teach them about a different culture
- Paint, sing, dance or story tell
Thank you to those families who have already volunteered! If you have any questions or would like some more information please get in touch with your child’s classroom teacher or me on the school phone number 4437 3633.
Easter Bonnet Parade
Today our students celebrated in style at our Easter Bonnet Parade and a whole lot of fun was had by all! Students enjoyed performing some Easter songs and parading around their amazing creative bonnets. A big thank you to our wonderful teachers for their support with this event and to the parents, carers and families who attended.
I wish you all a very happy and safe Easter break and am looking forward to another exciting term ahead of us!
Kind regards,
Yvette Wehlow

Engagement & Wellbeing

This week, we had our whole school celebration. All students were rewarded with pyjama and movie day to celebrate reaching our whole school target. Students worked extremely hard all term to earn tokens by following our Barkly Bs in the classroom and the playground.
Have a great Easter break. See you next term!
Kind regards,
Alisa Wheeler

Youth Parliament
On Wednesday, a group of fortunate year five and six students had the opportunity to engage in a Youth Parliament session. Each student took on the challenge of crafting and delivering a speech, either debating a predetermined motion or delving into a personally selected issue. Although nerve-wracking, each student stood before fellow students, educators, parents, and Member of Parliament, Mr. Robbie Katter to share their speeches. During this event, our Barkly Highway students gained invaluable insights into the inner workings of parliamentary proceedings. They not only shared their perspectives on local concerns but also discovered the power of their own voices in these settings.

In the PCYC Room with Miss Alissa
This week in the PCYC room we started to prep and pack down the room so that everything was ready for us to go on easter holidays!! The easter bunny also came to the room this week and the children had so much fun creating their easter egg baskets and then using them to collect their eggs during our easter egg hunt.
The children also helped the educators clean the room so that next term we can come into a fresh clean start (with a new ocean project being started). We hope everyone has an amazing break and we will see you all in Term 2!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
· year of schooling
· category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
· level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
· formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
· consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
· develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
See attached fact sheet for Parents/Carers for more information.
