Barkly Highway State School - Term 2 Week 8
Principal's Welcome
Welcome to our week 8 newsletter.
I learned last week that Jessica Grummitt has been selected as the permanent Business Manager for our school. Congratulations, Miss Jess! We appreciate all your hard work ensuring the smooth operation of our school. The Business Manager’s role is multifaceted and includes working with me to manage the school’s finances, facilities and human resources.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHER – LIQUIDATION UPDATE
Recent communication regarding our school photographer, Academy Photography Australia Pty Ltd. (Company)
Images extracted from the Company’s computer servers were provided to the liquidator on Tuesday 21 May 2024. While the images have been reconciled with the Company’s database of schools that have been photographed during 2024, it cannot be confirmed that the images are a school’s complete set.
It is anticipated that it will take some time, due to the volume of data, however, the images, currently in JPEG and/or TNJ format, will be transferred to the school. The Liquidator’s Update included a summary of actions taken to ensure the security of the images of students, staff and school data provided to the Company. All in-coming updates from the Liquidator will be shared with our school community as available.
LOOKING FORWARD
Over the next 2 weeks we will be extremely busy. You will notice the transformation of our oval as it is prepared by our amazing Schools Officer, Mr Kel, for all of our students to participate in our annual sports and athletics competitions. While there have been some restrictions on the use of areas of the oval for the markings to be done, this is important to the preparation of the markings for the running tracks and field events and ultimately to the safety and smooth running of the carnival events. Our Health and Physical Education Specialist, Miss Wheeler, lesson focus over the term has been to prepare the students with the skills to perform during the competitions. Please see the calendar of events and notes home for further details.
We welcome and encourage our families to join us for our athletics competition. At Barkly Highway State School, we believe in the holistic development of our students, and participating in events like these plays a vital role in shaping their growth. The following are some of the reasons why we believe attending our athletics competition is a must for your child -
- Fostering Team Spirit: Athletics competitions are not just about individual achievements; they are also about teamwork. Your child will have the opportunity to represent their house and in the future their school, working alongside their peers to achieve common goals. This experience instils a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that extends beyond the sports field.
- Building Confidence and Resilience: Competing in athletics requires determination, perseverance, and resilience. Your child will learn to face challenges head-on and bounce back from setbacks, developing invaluable life skills that will serve them well in the future.
- Promoting Physical Fitness: In today's digital age, it's more important than ever to encourage physical activity among children. By participating in athletics competitions, your child will engage in regular exercise, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
- Celebrating Achievements: Every child deserves to be celebrated for their accomplishments. Attending our athletics competition gives you the opportunity to witness your child's hard work and dedication firsthand, cheering them on as they strive for success.
- Creating Lasting Memories: The friendships forged and memories made during athletics competitions are priceless. By attending, you'll be creating cherished memories that your child will treasure for years to come.
We hope to see you and your child at the athletics competition, cheering on our talented young athletes as they showcase their skills and sportsmanship. Together, let's make these events memorable and rewarding experiences for everyone involved!
Always remember, if your child is away for a day, contact Miss Courtney in the Office, so our school records can reflect an explained absence and this will reduce the contacts the school needs to make with families.
Kind regards,
Fiona Kropp

Under 8’s Celebrations
On Friday, 24 May we celebrated Under 8’s day here at school with all of our Prep-Year 2 students and families. We also had some past students who are now in Year 9 at Spinifex come along and support us on the day as well as some potential future students with the Kindy children from Mount Isa Day Nursery and Kindergarten also attending. Thank you to Spinifex and MIDNK for their support of our event.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful P-2 classroom teachers, our specialist teachers and teacher aides who all put a great deal of time and effort into planning some wonderful activities for our students.
A big thank you also goes to our families, community services and organisations for helping make this day a huge success for our students.
In the afternoon our teachers also attended the community Under 8’s event which was a great opportunity to catch up with our families and wider community members in a really relaxed and fun environment. It was a great afternoon! Thank you to our teachers for also supporting this event.
Take a look through our photos to see all the fun!
Mrs Reports Report
Safety First
Safe entry and exit into school for our students is a priority. Please do not park on the footpaths outside the Staff Carpark near the Crossing on Buka Street or use the Staff Carparks to drop off and/or pick up students. We ask that everyone enters and exits the school safely using our dedicated pedestrian only entry/exit gates: near the Buka Street zebra crossing, on Bougainville Street near Junior Playground, the Stop Drop N Go gate or the gate near our Yarning Circle. Students and families are encouraged not to walk through staff carparks.
Academic Reporting
Semester 1 written reports will be emailed home at the end of Week 1 Term 3. This allows classroom teaching and assessment to continue until the last day of term 2. Please inform your child’s classroom teacher if your child/ren will be absent before the school term ends on Thursday 20 June.
Academic reporting involves communicating information to parents, carers and students about student achievement and progress for each learning area or subject undertaken, at a point in time. Reporting builds the school-parent partnership to improve student learning. School reporting processes are clear and transparent for parents.
OneSchool is used to complete written reports to parents and includes student achievement for each learning area studied in the reporting period, against the relevant achievement standard. Student effort and behaviour is also reported on.
We provide a written report at the end of each semester. Interim reports are delivered through teacher-parent-student discussions.
I encourage all parents who have not had a parent-teacher-student discussion, to make the time to connect with your child’s teacher to organise this.

Book Fair
Firstly, a big thank you to our school community who are always very supportive of our bi- annual Book Fair.
With the commission we earn from the Book Fairs and Book Clubs, we are able to purchase some new resources for the school, benefiting our students directly.
A big thankyou goes to our amazing staff, who volunteered their time to supervise and help with the Fair, we can't do it without you!
An equally big thankyou goes to our student volunteers who gave up some of their time to help out, your conduct during the Book Fair was fantastic.
Our guessing game, always a hot topic, was won with guessing the exact number of 162 lollies, by Braxton in Year 5/6B.
Congratulation Braxton! He won $20 worth of books from the Book Fair to enjoy, and he will share the jar of lollies with his class.
A few books needed to be re-ordered and we will distribute them as soon as they arrive.
Book Club Issue #4 was given out this week and orders for this will be due back this Friday please.
