Barkly Highway State School - Term 2 Week 10
Principal's Welcome
Welcome to our week 10 newsletter.
I learned last week that after the regional recruitment process, Yvette Wehlow has been selected to fulfill the Deputy Principal K-2 position based at our school. Congratulations, Miss Wehlow! This position, which is regionally funded as part of Project 1000, was vacated at the end of 2023, when Mrs Cremona relocated to Bowen.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHER – LIQUIDATION UPDATE
Recent communication regarding our school photographer, Academy Photography Australia Pty Ltd. (Company)
Our recent update (17/06/2024) states that approximately 20% of the transfer of images have been made to the relevant schools. This is a long process, limited by the speed downloading the files to USBs whilst also ensuring that it is completed with the highest caution and security.
With 200+ schools affected by the liquidation, the school has been asked that during this time we are patient as regular updates will be sent in due course, with specific correspondence once our school’s photos are ready and in the mail. It is predicted that all school transfers will be completed by mid-July, but this cannot be guaranteed, but feedback has been received from schools that have their USBs to date.
As the liquidators are only corresponding with the relevant nominated school contacts, we are asked to keep you updated with any information as it is provided. We are doing this through our newsletter as the information arrives.
Don’t forget – KEEP OUR SCHOOL SAFE
If you see anything suspicious around our school, please ring School Watch on 13 17 88.
Wishing everyone a relaxing and safe holiday period.
We will see everyone return to school for term 3 on Monday, 8 July.
Kind regards,
Fiona Kropp

PEEP INTO PREP
Over the last week we have had two very successful “Peep into Prep” afternoons. We welcomed our future 2025 prep students into our prep classrooms and garden for a look around and a play. I would like to thank our Prep teachers, students and their families for being so welcoming and helping make the transition to Prep a smooth one for our future students. Next term, will bring many more transition opportunities for our future Preppies and I thank our families in advance for your support with these important events in our school.
Don’t forget, if you have a child or know a family with a child; turning 5 from 1 July 2024 – 30 June 2025 they are eligible to begin Prep in 2025. We are still taking expressions of interest for our 2025 Prep cohort of students.
Contact the school office on 4437 3633 or come in and see us and we can make a time to talk about how our school can support you and your child with the transition from Kindergarten to Prep 2024-2025.
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS!
What a big and busy Semester 1 we have had. Welcoming our brand-new preppies and their families into our school community, transitioning Our Year 1s and 2s into new school routines as part of the big school, getting to know our new teachers and friends as well as so much wonderful teaching and learning happening in our classrooms every day. Each teacher has worked tirelessly this semester to plan and deliver engaging lessons for the students in their classrooms and we have seen some huge success and growth from each student! Academic reports will be sent home early next term and this will be an exciting time to reflect on and celebrate your child’s progress this year.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful Barkly Highway State School families for their continued support! I hope that you all enjoy a safe and relaxing break over the school holidays and I look forward to seeing everyone back next term ready for another semester of exciting learning opportunities.

RFDS AEROMEDICAL SIMULATOR
Over the last two days we have had The Royal Flying Doctor Service aeromedical simulator on our school oval - a full replica of the King Air B200. It has provided a unique opportunity for the students to learn about the vital work of RFDS. The students could take a seat inside the cockpit and experience what it is like to fly a life-saving mission in regional and remote Queensland. They also had fun dressing up as pilots, doctors and patients. A fun experience for our school.

UQ SCIENCE ROADSHOW
This week Barkly Highway has had the pleasure of hosting scientists from the University of Queensland (UQ) providing science demonstrations and workshops with our whole school as part of a science roadshow. The UQ scientists conducted a range of experiments involving principles of forces, energy, light and matter. The students had a great time watching the show and for those lucky enough to assist with the demonstrations or take part in the workshops, to experience science principles first hand. We hope that the roadshow ignited curiosities and inspired our next generation of aspiring scientists.
OLYMPIC SPIRIT
Both this term and next term, our school is proudly embracing the Olympic spirit in support of our nation’s proud Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Many students submitted artworks and messages of support which have been posted off to the Australian Olympic committee. Barkly Highway students' work will proudly be displayed in the Australian athlete village for the Paris summer Olympic games next month. Over the first four weeks of term three, students will be able to participate in extra lunchtime sporting activities and events as well as events to support and watch our athletes compete to do their best. We look forward to celebrating this same effort in our students by recognising students who demonstrate the Australian and Olympic values amongst our whole school as we celebrate these positive attributes. Keep an eye on next terms newsletters, class dojos and school website or Facebook for more information about these.

ATHLETICS DAY
Over the last week, students have participated in our annual Athletics carnival. It was so wonderful to see all the students participate and demonstrate excellent sportsmanship across the 3 days. Throughout the days, students competed in a number of field and track events such as shot put, high jump, long jump as well as the many short and long-distance running events. Our P-2 students participated in novelty events such as egg and spoon races, sack races, shark island and run the gauntlet.
Congratulations to Kent for winning the overall house competition as well as to our age champions:
2012: Xzariah and Kailan
2013: Harley-Rose and Riley
2014: Jade and Harvey
2015: Mackenzie and Braxton

Cleaner's Day celebrations with 1 Blue
Last Friday was School Cleaner’s Day. To say thank you to our amazing school cleaners Julie, Mari, and Wella, for all of the hard work they do around the school, 1 Blue wrote cards and decorated cupcakes. The children presented these to the ladies and said in person what they are grateful for.
