Barkly Highway State School - Term 3 Week 2
Principal's Welcome
Welcome back, to all our students and families! I trust your children had a wonderful break and everyone has now settled into the excitement of school life, learning in the classroom and playground together. Term 3 Class Overviews were sent home on Friday of week 1. Please contact your child/’s classroom teacher if you did not receive this as it details the specific classroom curriculum and other school events for the term for each student. Our busy term has begun and already the students and staff are excited for the events for the term.
Mrs Tamihana-Ratana, our Arts teacher, has been very busy preparing our school NAIDOC Activities Day for tomorrow, while Mr Alley has motivated our sporting kids and teachers to get involved in the Olympics’ Activities being organised to be held at playtime in the coming weeks. Let the Olympics begin!
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION VISITORS TO MOUNT ISA
On Wednesday and Thursday our system leaders Director General, Michael De’Ath; Associate Director General, Sharon Schimming; Regional Director, Joseba Larrazabal; visited Mount Isa. Focus key areas for the visit are Partnership Schools, Project 1000 and Mount Isa Educational Precinct. Our Leadership team have attended and been active participants in Project 1000 and Mount Isa Educational Precinct and attended meetings in these areas on Thursday. (We are not a Partnership School so not involved in these activities.)
JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
Today 9 pre-service teachers visited our school along with their university team. The focus for their time at Barkly Highway State School was to engage in becoming ‘Professionally Ready – Leading from the Classroom – Building Capability in Rural and Remote’. Miss Samios, Miss Wehlow and Mr Alley presented using their experiences from working in Mount Isa as early career teachers and then participated in a Q&A Session.

Mrs Roberts Report
REGULAR SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Did you know? Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement.
Why is regular attendance at school important?
Regular school attendance will mean that your child has a better chance in life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day.
- They learn better
- They make friends
- They are happier
- They have a brighter future.
Please see attached article for further information on how to support your child to attend school. It provides information on these topics:
- What should I do if our family is going on a holiday in school time?
- Do I need to let the school know if my child has been away from school?
- Are you having problems getting your child to school for some of these reasons? If so, a set routine can help.
- What should I do if my child won’t go to school? We are here to help. 😊
Student Council
On Monday 22 July, Semester 2 Student Council Representatives will be presented with their badge on parade. Families are most welcome to attend the parade, commencing at 2:00.
We want to say thank you to Semester 1 Student Council. You have done a fantastic job representing your classmates and making our school a happier place.
Olympics Celebrations at Barkly Highway
This term the school has been getting involved in all things Olympics. Our generous staff have organised for extra sporting opportunities for students to try in their lunchtimes. Many students have eagerly signed up their interest to try some different activities that they may never have done before. So far students have played touch football, hockey and badminton, with lots of positive feedback about the games. Over the coming weeks students will have the opportunity to try table tennis, basketball and off-road cycling. The lunchtime offerings will culminate with the celebration of Green & Gold Day with the rest of the nation on August 2. On this day students will attend school in their green and gold clothing and the whole school will engage in a rotation of various sports and disciplines for a fun celebration of the Olympics.
District Athletics
Last Thursday, we had 24 students from years 4-6 represent Barkly Highway State School at the annual Mount Isa school sport district athletics carnival. It was wonderful to see all students participate and demonstrate excellent sportsmanship. Throughout the day, students competed in a number of field and track events such as shot put, high jump, long jump as well as the many short and long-distance running events. Congratulations to Riley and Harley-Rose who were awarded 11 yrs age champion, Xzariah 12 yrs 2nd age champion and Harvey 10yrs 3rd age champion. Barkly Highway State School was also 1st place overall.
Outdoor Classroom with 5/6 Gold
5/6 Gold were super excited to use the schools new outdoor classroom. Students used the QR codes around the school to complete an Olympic trivia quiz in groups. Everyone enjoyed being able to use the new iPads and the fresh change of learning outside the classroom.
We can’t wait to incorporate the outdoor classroom into this terms English and mathematics units! Thank you to the P&C for this awesome new resource!
