Principal's Welcome
SCHOOL PHOTO FILES
Have you contacted Miss Courtney and requested your school photo files? Miss Courtney has sent over 100 emails to individual parents already but we know that there are many more emails to come.
Parents / caregivers are asked to send one email for each family to photos@barklyhighwayss.eq.edu.au and request the particular photos that were snapped by our school photographer who have now gone into liquidation. Please include in your email: The Student’s Name, Class and Photos required.
I take this opportunity to thank our parent, Miss Telisha Crisp, who edited the class and other group photo files so that they were ready for families.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BURSARY – SPINIFEX STATE COLLEGE
Spinifex State College Instrumental Program (IM) announced Bursaries created for students entering Spinifex into year 7 next year (2025). Each Bursary will cover the Instrumental Music fees at Spinifex for the student in grade 7.
The Bursary aims to support retention of students’ transitioning from primary school into high school and promoting attendance to Spinifex State College where there is an established Instrumental Music program for both band and strings.
A Bursary will be awarded to a student from each program (band and strings) from each school that meets the requirements of the application. The Bursary will be presented by a Spinifex State College representative at each state primary school's year 6 farewell along with the other awards.
The Mount Isa IM Teachers have handed out Bursary applications to applicable students.
RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY
As we come to the last days of the term, I extend my sincere thanks to our staff for all their hard work and dedication this term. The commitment to foster a positive learning environment and support for each student's growth, has not gone unnoticed. I am constantly amazed by the passion, creativity and enthusiasm the teachers bring to their teaching, to make a significant difference for the educational journey for their students.
OCCUPATIONAL VIOLENCE AND AGGRESSION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
A new Occupational Violence and Aggression awareness campaign was launched on Monday 9 September.
No excuse for school abuse is a new public awareness campaign to address violence and abuse towards teachers and school staff. All students have the right to learn and teachers and school staff have a right to work—in a safe environment.
The No excuse for school abuse campaign highlights that schools are workplaces and, just like any workplace, abuse or aggression of any kind is unacceptable.
Kind regards,
Fiona Kropp

Showcase Winners
Last week, Barkly Highway State School, as part of Project 1000, was recognised as a Showcase award winner. The Showcase awards for Excellence in Schools, are Queensland’s pinnacle awards in state education. Showcase provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the hard work done by staff, students, families and the wider school communities of Mount Isa.
Through regular planned and collaborative Communities of Practice, our Mount Isa primary schools have lifted the academic and wellbeing outcomes in the early years and strengthened whole-of-town transitions from Kindy to Prep.
This award is a great honour and I am incredibly proud of our Barkly Highway teaching team and grateful for the support of our families and wider school community.
Mrs Roberts Report
Wow! September holidays are upon us! This week, during social skills and think tank, we have been discussing personal safety with the students.
Be Careful When Playing Outside – Always let an adult know where you are. If you're riding a bike or scooter, make sure to wear your helmet!
Stay Safe Around Water – Whether you're at the pool, beach or river always swim with an adult nearby and never swim alone.
Safety Net - Identify your child’s safety net of trusted adults and safe places
Stay Safe Online – If you’re using the internet, always ask an adult before visiting a new website and never share personal information like your address or phone number.
Be Cautious Around Roads – Look both ways before crossing the street, use the crosswalk, and never run across the road.
Have Fun and Stay Healthy – Don’t forget to drink lots of water, wear sunscreen when playing outside.
Enjoy your holiday, stay safe, and we can’t wait to see you back at school soon!
Children’s Book Council of Australia
Early next term, six Queensland Children’s Authors are visiting Mount Isa as a part of the CBCA Queensland’s 70th Birthday celebrations. The author tour supports the CBCA mission to connect, communicate, celebrate and advocate for the value of stories.
The two authors visiting our school are:

Charlotte Barka – Charlotte is a Brisbane based children’s author of picture books and early-middle grade fiction. She grew up on a farm in south-east Queensland and loves sharing her passion for creativity and stories with kids in rural areas. Her books include, 11 Ruby Road, All Bodies are Good Bodies, the Edie’s Experiments series and From My Head to My Toes, I Say What Goes.
Poem Workshop with Mr Alley
As this busy term comes to an end, our students continue to be involved in a wide range of curriculum activities and extension opportunities. This week a few of our students in grades 3, 4 and 5 participated in a poetry workshop conducted through the Red Room poetry initiative supported by the Wollongong City Council. Students watched a zoom meeting presented by author and Order of Australia Medal recipient Kirli Saunders. Kirili read some of her work to inspire students, then lead them through a range of activities to practise their poetic skills. At the end of the session students created a poem about a plant or animal to highlight Threatened Species Day. These poems were entered into a competition and the initiative also plants a tree in honour of each poem entry received. Well done to the students for engaging so positively in the workshop and good luck on your entries!
Well done to all students for your term 3 efforts, have a safe an enjoyable break and I look forward to seeing everyone upon our return, ready for our final term of learning.
Regards,
Cameron Alley
Math Carnival with 5/6 Green
5/6 Green were lucky enough to enjoy a carnival themed Math morning. Students got to engage with a variety of carnival inspired Math games. They were all so engaged I think they forgot they were doing Math!
Term 3 in 5/6 Gold!
We have had a busy term in 5/6 Gold! Some of the highlights include making and testing electrical circuits in science, practising our maths working out by using chalk and learning outside the classroom and finally our lolly salad which was to celebrate all their hard work and great behaviour. Bring on term four!
