Barkly Highway State School - Term 1 Week 8
Principal's Welcome

SCHOOL VISIT
Regional Director, Joseba Larazabel and School Supervisor, Natalie Taylor visited 5/6 Red and 3 /4 Blue classrooms on Tuesday afternoon. Students from each class, shared their English work and talked about how the support strips in their books assisted with the organisation of their writing. In both classrooms, students used the Learning Walls to identify important elements and resources that can be used either at the wall or taken to desks to complete their writing. Students were able to explain to the visitors the unit learning intention using hand symbols. Ask your child or children the learning intention of their English Unit!
Thank you to Miss Duncan, Miss Wall and students for demonstrating how your Learning Walls are the third teacher in the classroom.

K-2 Deputy News

We are coming in to the last couple of weeks of a very busy and exciting term! Learning and assessment is taking place right up until the last day of school. We are currently sitting at 91% attendance in our Prep – Year 2 space. Which is very exciting! It is important that students keep attending every day and finish the term strong! However, if you know you are going on holidays early, please keep in contact with your child’s classroom teacher so they can prepare accordingly.
Prep – Year 2 Easter Bonnet Parade
On the last day of school this term we will be finishing with an Easter celebration for our Prep – Year 2 students. Our students will be creating easter bonnets in class with their teachers. Families are invited to watch students proudly parade their creations at 8:30 in the under covered area on Friday 04 April. Keep an eye out on your class dojo for reminders and updates.

Under Eights Week
The theme for Under Eights Week 2025 is ‘Unleashing Scientific Thinking through Play’. This is an exciting theme, as it will support and encourage children to observe, make predictions, explore, test theories, and uncover scientific concepts through play.
Next term we will be looking for families to volunteer in a variety of different ways. So if you have an interest in or skills related to science, we'd love to hear from you—please reach out and let us know!
Our Barkly Highway State School Under Eights Day celebrations will be taking place on Thursday 22 May from 8:30am. Keep an eye out early next term for more information!

Mrs Roberts' Report

Team Up update
Our Year 5 students have been covering the topics of Problem Solving, Trust & Teamwork. The sessions have challenged the students to think, communicate and look at things in different ways. When students learn to tackle their problems on their own or in a group, they become more resilient and confident to tackle future challenges.
Teamwork teaches essential communication and social skills.
Developing trust within the group can help them build bonds, teach them to work together to meet a shared goal, and improve communication and cooperation skills.

PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT DISCUSSIONS are happening in Week 9 from 24/03/25 - 28/03/25
Parent-Teacher-Student Discussions are to be held next week. This is one of the two formal opportunities that is scheduled in the school calendar for parents/carers to discuss their individual student’s achievement, effort and behaviour, as well as set student goals for future success with our teachers. Our teachers are currently sending home information about these meetings. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the latest information on your child/ren’s progress with their learning and an opportunity for some feedback for the next steps.
P&C Updates
The P&C would like to thank everyone who attended and took up positions within our P&C at our AGM. Congratulations to Mischa Grummitt - President, Alastair Grubb - Vice-President, Kate Fischer/Candice Turner - Treasurer and Leah Wilcox - Secretary. We would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to our outgoing treasurer/events co-ordinator/organisor/tuckshop helper/amazing-ensuring-the-P&C-ran-smoothly person, Candice Turner. Without her, we truly would not be the same P&C and numerous events/ideas would not have been as successful as they were. Thank you, and enjoy some time away from being in a P&C!
We would also like to show off our NEW BBQ!
Purchased and ready to go, we had amazing support from a generous anonymous donation of $500 and the support of Bunnings Mount Isa to donate goods for using our BBQ. We're very excited for the next school event! Our chefs are also excited with the new bbq, tools and trays donated!

Lastly, we have our upcoming Bomb-The-Teachers event! Lock in for Friday, 2 May in the last session of the day! Balloons have been ordered and are on the way. Stay tuned to Facebook and notes will be sent home soon so you can book your balloon purchases to throw at your favorite teachers/staff. Thank you and we look forward to a BBQ and the Bomb-The-Teachers event coming up.
If you have any ideas, or want to come along to our P&C Meetings and see what we do, our next meeting will be in Term 2 Tuesday, 13 May.

Domino Fun
This week students have spent many of their lunch breaks in the library creating a domino run. Some days it was more successful than others, but the end result of the team work, was not a true indication of the fun had creating the run.

Unexplained Absences
We are very pleased with the support from families to follow-up unexplained absences. Currently we have all absences explained in Prep - Year 2 and are still working with 19 students who have 45 absences to finalise.
Remember when you receive an SMS message of an unexplained absence, a reply explaining the absence does not cost you. Any orange absence forms need to be returned to reduce the necessary follow-up which the school is required to do.
Kings & Queens in Prep Gold
Prep Gold have well and truly settled into school life and are blossoming into reading and writing superstars! This week, we stepped into the world of kings and queens, creating a magical phonics castle—complete with a moat, dragon eggs, and Rapunzel’s flowing hair. Our dragon eggs are at the heart of our learning, each set to hatch as we discover new sounds. With every new sound, we unlock more of the spelling code, strengthening our writing skills and growing in confidence. What an exciting adventure in learning!
